Self-Giving God: The Breath of Life

Face-to-face is a very intimate posture for two people to hold. The intimacy of that moment stirs up the fear of being known and the pleasure of knowing. But God has designed it that way. To be known by another, in intimacy and closeness, resembles the spiritual fulfillment that we have with God through Jesus Christ.

Can you imagine waking up face-to-face with God?

Your source of life. Your greatest need. The very life you live began with God. Literally read, "Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being." (Genesis 2:7) After having fashioned Adam from the dust of the earth, with His hands, God now employs His face in the creation of man. God does not need oxygen as if He had a body, but the Bible tells us that God formed with his hands and that He breathed. My assumption from the continuing bodily imagery is that God exhaled in order to give man his first breath of life.

Face-to-face.

Adam awakes to his Creator - the first act of being known for Adam was not sex with Eve. He was first known by God (in a non-sexual way, of course).

God loves us. His actions on our behalf, coming from within His own will and might, are an act of self-giving. He willingly comes face-to-face with Adam to impart life.

Kendra, I'm sure you already know this but the famous Scripture, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1.1 ESV) is quite telling.

The phrase, "...and the Word προς τον God" can be translated with the flair, "...and the Word was face-to-face with God."

Undeniably beautiful, isn't it?

From your style of writing I have a sneaking suspicion that you already love (or would love) A.W. Tozer's The Pursuit of God.

You've been added to my blogroll, Kendra. Grace!

Thanks, Larry. Great info on John 1. I have a friend who loves Tozer and has recently told me to read him. Maybe I'll have to dust the book off and get to reading what I invested in!
